Chapter Eighteen

Dawn broke softly over the mountain. I was up when it did.

We gathered in the main room as the first rays of sun painted the eastern sky pink and gold. There were seven of us. I realized, thinking about the scope of the job, that we could use seven more. We went to the weapons room and gathered weapons, some with magical properties and some without. I had three knives and my magical sword, Excalibur.

“Final check,” Captain Jack announced. “Explosives?”

“Primed and ready,” Golden Eye confirmed, patting a worn leather satchel.

“Medical supplies?”

Doc nodded, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. “We have what we need.”

“Communications?”

Whisper held up a set of small devices that looked like earpieces. “Range-tested. We’ll stay connected up to two miles apart.”

She handed them around.

Captain Jack nodded, satisfied. “We take three trucks to the ship in case we meet some of the king’s army on the way.”

We loaded into the trucks—old, battered vehicles that wouldn’t attract attention on rural mountain roads. I ended up in the middle truck with Paris, Fluffy, and Golden Eye at the wheel. Paris sat close beside me, our shoulders occasionally touching as the truck bounced over the uneven road. Her scent, something like cinnamon and smoke—brought back memories I’d tried hard to forget. Fluffy was in the truck bed.

“This should be fun,” she said.

She meant it. Danger always made her happy. Given what we were about to do, she should have been feeling ecstatic.

We were descending into a small valley when we saw it, a village, or what remained of one. From the road, I could see blackened timber frames. No movement, no sound, just the eerie stillness of a place where life had been violently extinguished.

“What happened?” I asked.

Golden Eye said, “King’s men. It happened in a lot of villages. It’s still happening. If any village refuses to pay taxes or can’t pay them, it pays a different price.”

“Roman style,” Paris said.

We passed several more villages like that one. I asked Golden Eye why no one had stopped the king’s men.

“Maybe there was a time when he could have been stopped, but by the time he was burning towns he was too strong. And people had lost so much after the nuclear bombs that they didn’t have it in them to fight. They pretended that it wouldn’t be so bad if he were king. Whatever happened, it couldn’t be worse that the world they were in. But they were wrong.”

A few minutes later we came to the small landing field and the ship.

I’d heard stories about such vessels, but never seen one. It was magical. It resembled a traditional pirate ship from a few centuries ago (a wooden hull, three masts with furled sails), but the similarities ended there. The ship was maybe seventy feet from bow to stern, with a sleek design. This was a battleship.

Its hull was constructed of dark wood that shimmered, inlaid with intricate patterns of silver and copper that formed what I recognized as complex magical circuits. Instead of
